19. Tangled
Starring: (voices) Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy
Directors: Nathan Greno, Byron Howard
Release Date: 24th November 2010
Disney’s 50th animated movie and, at a rumoured $260m, the most expensive ever made. Loosely based on the German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, this tells the story of the magically long-haired Rapunzel who has spent her entire life in a tower, but is released by a runaway thief and given the chance to discover the world and who she really is. The CGI, modeled on the traditional look of oil paintings on canvas, looks stunning and if the co-director of Bolt can bring over that same humour it should be good fun.
18. 127 Hours
Starring: James Franco, Kate Mara, Amber Tamblyn, Clémence Poésy
Director: Danny Boyle
Release Date: 12th November 2010
Winning a Best Director Oscar (in this case for Slumdog Millionaire) gives you the freedom to make a movie that nobody thinks is a good idea. Like, say, a one-man true story about a mountain climber who becomes trapped by a boulder in Utah and had to cut his own arm off. Sounds grim, but if anyone can turn that into a poetic ode to joy it’s director Danny Boyle. James Franco is the only actor on screen for almost the entire duration, so expect something special from him.
17. The Book of Eli
Starring: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis
Directors: Albert & Allen Hughes
Release Date: 15th January 2010
You didn’t know you wanted a post-apocalyptic showdown between Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman, but the guys that made Menace II Society did, so they went ahead and made The Book of Eli for you. It’s about, naturally, the titular book, a tome that may be the key to man’s salvation. Denzel defends the book, Oldman does the opposite. Comic Book artist Chris Weston did design work for the film, and says on his blog that “you’ll get to see Denzel Washington kick serious arse in this film… ‘Man on Fire’ is a mere taster compared to the righteous vengeance he rains down on the scum in this film”. Sold.
16. Kick-Ass
Starring: Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloë Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Release Date: 16th April 2010
A superhero dramedy, based on the Mark Millar graphic novels, which was made outside the studio system. What that means is – no studio notes, no committees, no dumbing down, it can be as edgy as it damn well likes. And this story of what would happen if an ordinary teenager became a superhero, one with no powers, and went up against the mob, has considerable style to go along with it. Add to that a much-hyped Nicolas Cage performance that doesn’t feel like he’s selling out, and you’ve got a breath of fresh air all round.
I tried to leave comments for 2010 movies releases but it never goes through. I think this list of films is great. I look forward to Tron Legacy, Clash Of The Titans, The Expendables, Iron Man 2. hope this goes through.
